The Jagannath Temple is one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Jagannath (a form of Lord Vishnu), along with his siblings Balabhadra and Subhadra. It is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites in India and holds immense religious importance for Hindus.

Only practicing Hindus are allowed inside the temple premises. Non-Hindus are not permitted entry but can view the temple from the nearby Raghunandan Library rooftop.

The most famous festival is the Rath Yatra, also known as the Chariot Festival. During this grand event, the deities are taken out in massive, beautifully decorated chariots and pulled by thousands of devotees.

The temple kitchen is one of the largest in the world. The Mahaprasad (sacred food offering) is cooked in earthen pots using traditional methods and is believed to never go to waste. Devotees consider it highly sacred.

The present structure of the temple was built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga dynasty.
